Spain offers more than beaches

Carol explains why the Posada community’s location is so special. Play with the sound on.

Text version

Hi there. Here is something that perhaps most people do not appreciate. Given the extent of its mountainous land, Spain is often cited as having one of the largest mountainous areas in the EU. Austria and Italy can be considered the most mountainous, given the percentage of their land area, but Spain’s vast, high-altitude terrain makes it more mountainous in absolute terms.

Let us now discuss extremes regarding the location of the Possada retirement community, which is less than an hour from sea level. All around is as flat as you like (except for the famous Indian Chief rock) until you reach the El Torcal nature reserve with its unusual limestone rock formations, which is on the other side of Antequera.

Even though the highest point is 1300 metres above sea level, there is evidence to suggest that even El Torcal formed part of the seabed 150 million years ago. If that does not impress you, there is more.

If you go left from the Possada community and join the A92 motorway, you will be heading towards the Sierra Nevada ski resort in Granada, which is a whopping 3400 metres above sea level and is less than two hours away. Park La Possada, by contrast, is only 433 metres above sea level. That makes the location of the Possada retirement community very interesting.

The area is known as the crossroads of Andalucia, with a fabulous road network that allows you to head to any part of Spain or Portugal. Residents with motor homes or caravans can head off in any direction and explore somewhere new. There is a dedicated parking area within the community where residents can store their caravans or motorhomes free of charge. Imagine being able to drive to Portugal in less time than it would take to fly from the UK.

Just because you live in Spain does not mean you should forgo holidays. Spain has much more to offer than beaches, and I hope I have given you an idea of what it can be like to go on holiday in Spain whilst living there. Thanks for watching.
